The brief was to create something industrial to match the building. Horizontal slats of English brown oak contrasted with pillars of black oak veneer, its big, bold and beautiful. The hard square form is broken only by the handles which sweep from top to bottom in gentle curves. The handles are dyed ripple sycamore, the ripple giving an almost metallic sheen.
The first piece was a success and a matching console table was ordered, the same brown oak slats but this time with bog oak. The legs are solid oak with a thin 3mm skin of bog oak, one of our rarest and most beautiful timbers; preserved in the peat bogs for thousands of years it is almost jet black. A wonderful material to be used sparingly. Two dovetailed drawers hand made in the traditional way, side hung on solid oak runners.
